Former Permatang Pauh MP serving strictly in pro bono capacity, says ministry

KUALA LUMPUR – Nurul Izzah Anwar is not a paid adviser to the Economic Stimulus Implementation and Coordination Unit Between National Agencies (Laksana), the Finance Ministry clarified today.

It has said social media posts claiming the daughter of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was being paid for the role are fake, and that Nurul Izzah serves strictly in a pro bono capacity.

“A document being spread on social media is just an unofficial draft of an offer. The official agreement signed by Nurul Izzah states that she will provide advisory services to Laksana ‘pro bono’ or without payment or any other financial gain,” the ministry said on X.

The ministry’s post on the matter today follows a police report lodged by PKR Youth exco Nadia Fathin Syahira Ahmad Nazri yesterday against Bersatu information committee member Badrul Hisham Shaharin, also known as Che’gubard, for allegedly defaming Nurul Izzah by saying the former Permatang Pauh MP is receiving RM35,000 as an adviser to Laksana.

On February 10, Nurul Izzah said on Facebook that she would be making a police report over false information about her.

Last year, she was appointed by Anwar as senior adviser on economics and finance to the prime minister, an unpaid position. Anwar is also finance minister.

The appointment, two months after Anwar became prime minister, drew flak, and Nurul Izzah announced in February the same year that she no longer held the post. – February 14, 2024
