If you want to fire us, just do it: Labuan MP dares Bersatu leadership

Responding to Datuk Razali Idris’ call for those backing PM to resign, Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman says he is ‘more than willing’ to be independent

6:49 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu’s Labuan MP Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman has challenged his party to sack him and the others who have pledged support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s government.

Responding defiantly to Bersatu’s information chief Datuk Razali Idris’ calls for them to resign from the party, Suhaili told Scoop that the leadership should make the move to expel the MPs.

“Don’t wait for us to resign, if you want to (get rid of us), just fire us as soon as possible,” he said when contacted today.

Suhaili, along with five other Bersatu MPs, openly declared their support for Anwar over the past few months.

Besides Suhaili, the five other Bersatu MPs who expressed support for Anwar are Tanjong Karang MP Datuk Zulkafperi Hanapi, Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), and Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar).

Suhaili also said that he is more than willing to be an independent MP if the party decides to fire him.

“I don’t care about Razali’s statement. We won’t resign, we won’t leave the party unless we are forced out.

“However, our support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim remains steadfast until the end of the civil government’s term.”

Responding to Razali’s claim that amendments to the party’s constitution would result in their automatic expulsion and the use of the anti-hopping laws, Suhaili says this may not affect him and the other MPs.

“We did not quit the party, our membership was stripped. How can he talk about using the (anti-hopping) act when we did not jump parties?”

“Whoever accepts his challenge, it indicates that Bersatu lacks confidence in amending the constitution. Stop seeking cheap publicity – it’s over, Razali.”

Meanwhile, Gua Musang MP Mohd Azizi emphasized that the proposed constitutional amendment would not hinder his commitment to serving his constituents.

“As far as I know, the party cannot take action because the constitution was changed after I decided to support the prime minister.

Any proposed amendment will not be arbitrarily approved by the Registrar of Societies if it aims to character assasinate elected representatives.” – February 17, 2024
