No need to vacate seats as long as they’re still Bersatu members, says Tan Sri Johari Abdul

KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu MPs who switched support to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim can write to the Dewan Rakyat speaker’s office if they wish to change their seating arrangements.

With a week to go before the Dewan Rakyat begins its session, speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said writing in to change their seating in the House was a regular occurrence.

“They can write to me stating their reasons for switching seats and I’ll look into it.

“It could be they don’t like their ‘neighbour’ because he likes to shout or maybe he likes to eat petai,” he said during a high tea with the media at the Parliament building today.

“Perhaps the MPs who have been dropped as ministers would also write in to switch seats and make way for the new ministers.”

He reiterated that the MPs did not need to vacate the seats they won in the general election as per the anti-hopping law.

“They just need to inform me that they are still members of their current parties.”

Meanwhile, Johari said he had not received any motions of no-confidence against Anwar as of today.

Last November, Labuan MP Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman, Jeli lawmaker Zahari Kechik and Gua Musang MP Mohd Azizi Abu Naim applied for a seat change away from other Perikatan Nasional lawmakers.

The other three Bersatu lawmakers who switched support are Datuk Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tg Karang), Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang) and Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar). – February 19, 2024
