Mas Ermieyati wants Tiong probed for power abuse after Tourism DG’s sacking

Sudden termination of Datuk Ammar Abd Ghapar troubling, says Bersatu MP

7:36 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu’s Masjid Tanah MP Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin has expressed deep concern over the alleged abuse of power by Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, following the unexpected termination of Tourism Malaysia director-general Datuk Ammar Abd Ghapar.

She said the recent termination of Ammar’s contract, without clear justification, was disconcerting, given his significant contributions as a prominent figure and his standing as an asset to the country’s tourism sector.

Mas Ermieyati, who served as deputy tourism minister from 2015 to 2018, said she had previously collaborated with Ammar, adding that he had “demonstrated dedication and commitment to enhancing the country’s tourism”.

“As the country strives to celebrate Visit Malaysia 2026, accusations against the minister (Tiong) are deeply troubling, and I urge the relevant authorities to promptly investigate these serious allegations,” she said in a statement today.

“If the government is genuinely committed to transparency and good governance, a thorough investigation and a clear statement on all highlighted allegations are necessary.”

Earlier reports indicated Ammar’s contract termination from the ministry would take effect on February 26, with the termination letter believed to have been issued yesterday.

It is understood that Tiong decided to terminate Ammar due to his dissatisfaction with the latter’s non-compliance with directives.

Scoop has reached out to Tiong for comment.

Mas Ermieyati underscored the concerns of stakeholders in the tourism industry, emphasising that the lack of an official statement or investigation by the government could adversely impact the country’s tourism sector.

She highlighted that the allegations against Tiong involved actions and behaviour inconsistent with the expected integrity and ethical standards of a minister, particularly in Malaysia, known for its multicultural and harmonious work culture.

“The accusations against Tiong are troubling many parties. The appointment of friends and family members to crucial positions in the tourism office is indicative of nepotism and cronyism, both of which have no place in a transparent and merit-based government.”

“Moreover, the arbitrary transfer of government officials without justifiable grounds raises serious questions about the motives behind such actions. Misappropriation of government funds is another serious charge that cannot be ignored,” she said.

“The tourism sector plays a pivotal role in Malaysia’s economy, and any mismanagement or misappropriation of funds can have adverse effects on the industry and the country as a whole.” – February 23, 2024
