KUALA LUMPUR – Backing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s government appears to have paid off for Tanjong Karang MP Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi, the latest Perikatan Nasional (PN) MP to declare support for the unity government.
Speaking at a press conference today, Zulkafperi admitted that opposition lawmakers face financial challenges which restrict them from helping out their voters.
“I have to admit, after giving support (to Anwar), such programmes could be organised,” he was quoted as saying by New Straits Times.
“I apologise to the Tanjong Karang constituents, it’s not that I didn’t want to do any programmes before this, but we (opposition MPs) can’t do anything.”
The press conference was held after Zulkafperi attended the Madani Sales and Mini Health Carnival in Taman Sahabat, which is under his parliamentary constituency.
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari had earlier launched the programme, which was held in the Tanjong Karang constituency for the first time.
On January 24, Zulkafperi became the sixth Bersatu MP to support Anwar, citing the need for political stability and the nation’s economic recovery.
Similar to the other Bersatu lawmakers who had previously declared their support for Anwar’s government, he also said he decided to address the people’s problems, especially with the rising cost of living.
Before Zulkafperi, Bukit Gantang MP Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal announced his backing of Anwar’s administration, following Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang) and Zahari Kechik (Jeli). – February 25, 2024
