Former MDEC CEO Surina Shukri dies at 49 after cancer struggle

She succumbed to her illness at 9am today at Ampang Puteri Hospital in Kuala Lumpur

11:02 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) former chief executive officer Surina Shukri died at 9am today after a long battle with cancer. She was 49.

In a statement from her family, Surina died at Ampang Puteri Hospital here with her loved ones by her side, reported FMT.

Surina led MDEC between January 16, 2019, and August 31, 2021. When announcing her resignation, she said she would move on to focus on interests close to her heart.

She leaves behind her husband, Jasmin Ong Rashid, and three children.

Funeral prayers will be held at the At-Taqwa Mosque here today.

When she was with MDEC, Surina was named one of the World’s 50 Most Influential People Revolutionising Governance in the inaugural Agile 50 list in 2020. The list was an initiative by Apolitical and the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Agile Governance.

She was also serving as an independent non-executive director at Capital A – parent company of AirAsia – and CIMB Investment Bank Bhd.

In addition, Surina was a governing board member of Unesco’s Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education of Peace and was a board member of Accelerate Global.

Prior to her return to Malaysia, she was working in the US, which included 17 years as an investment banker at JPMorgan Chase & Co in New York City.

She held a dual degree from the Wharton School of Business and the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. – February 29, 2024
