Police open probe against Australian blogger Murray Hunter over 3R issues

Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain says Bukit Aman has sought help from Interpol to trace Aussie national

8:00 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Police have opened investigation papers against Australian blogger, Murray Hunter, over some of his articles which touched on religion, race and the Malay Rulers (3R).

Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain told Scoop that Bukit Aman has sought the help of Interpol to trace the whereabouts of the former university lecturer who is said to be residing in Hat Yai, Thailand.

At least three police reports have been lodged against Hunter who wrote articles linking the demolition of the Shah Alam Stadium and its redevelopment to the Selangor palace.

Razarudin said Hunter is currently in Bangkok, according to information police have obtained.

“No blue notice has been issued, but Interpol is helping us ascertain his whereabouts.

“He is in Bangkok. We have already opened investigations on him related to 3R issues,” Razarudin said.

An Interpol blue notice is for additional information about a person of interest including their location and other identification.

Razarudin added that investigations showed Hunter had not entered or returned to Australia in a long time.

Hunter’s writings had alarmed Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), where he taught previously, and the institution on January 31 released a press statement to distance itself from him, confirming that he was no longer a lecturer there.

The UniMAP Corporate Communications Center also said Hunter’s employment at the university was terminated in 2015.

“UniMAP would like to emphasise that the writer in question known as Murray Hunter has been terminated since 14 August 2015 as a university lecturer and he has nothing to do with this university,” UniMAP said.

However, he still uses the position of UniMAP associate professor in his Research Gate profile. – March 2, 2024
