Express bus operators can get approval from Apad for safe late-night campus drop-offs: Loke

Minister pledges cooperation with Higher Education Ministry to ensure safe facilities on campuses

11:14 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Express bus operators should apply to the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) for permission to drop off students on campuses of higher education institutes late at night.

In a written parliamentary response to Zulkifli Ismail (Jasin-PN), Transport Minister Anthony Loke said that Apad has granted special temporary approval for express buses to drop students at campuses at specific times, especially late at night.

This is because students find it difficult to return to their hostels using last-mile transportation such as shuttle buses, taxis and e-hailing, he said.

“Express bus operators must file an application with Apad to obtain the approval letter.

“The Transport Ministry will work with the Higher Education Ministry to ensure that safe facilities are provided at the involved campuses so that buses can enter and drop off students in a safe location,” he said.

Zulkifli had asked Loke about allowing express buses to drop off students at their campuses for safety and cost-saving reasons, especially late at night.

Loke stated that his ministry will work with Apad to improve the transportation network in order to continue the express bus service, which provides a long-distance service from one terminal to another with a reliable and safe last-mile service. – March 4, 2024
