Hadi submits letter to Selangor sultan amid sedition probe

PAS president’s office says letter dated March 4 sent via ruler’s private secretary

2:41 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang has sent a letter addressed to the Sultan of Selangor amid the sedition investigation against the opposition lawmaker.

Hadi’s office said the letter dated March 4, 2024, was submitted to Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah via His Majesty’s private secretary Datuk Lela Bakti.

Today, the police is expected to take Hadi’s statement at the PAS headquarters in Jalan Raja Laut here.

On March 1, Scoop reported that Hadi was investigated for sedition again, this time over his “Ketinggian Islam Wajib Dipertahankan” statement made on February 20.

Top cop Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said an investigation was ongoing under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

In August last year, Hadi was investigated for sedition after he allegedly disputed the Pardons Board’s authority during a political talk at PAS’ Bakri headquarters in Johor.

The PAS leader allegedly said the process of granting pardons to an offender in Malaysia went against Islamic teachings.

Under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, those found guilty could be fined up to RM5,000 or imprisoned for a maximum of three years or both.

Previously, Hadi said was willing to go to prison if found guilty of committing any offence.

“I am ready to be punished. I’m not sure if the punishment is a jail term or a fine, but I would rather go to jail.” – March 5, 2024
