KUALA LUMPUR – More than a dozen relatives of the passengers on board the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 staged a protest near the Malaysian embassy in Beijing, China as they commemorated the tragedy’s 10th anniversary today.

Among them is Li Shuce, who lost his son on the plane and said he remained “hopeful” that his child is still alive.

“We are looking forward to him returning soon. He was a great kid,” he was quoted as saying by AFP.

He also urged the Chinese government to “quickly figure out what the actual facts of the situation are”.

“It’s been 10 years already. And now what’s going on with getting to the bottom of (it)? Is it a government conspiracy or what? We don’t know anything.”

The Boeing 777 disappeared from radar screens carrying 239 people on March 8, 2014, en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The plane remains missing despite the largest multinational search operation in aviation history.

In voicing their unhappiness over the called-off search some seven years ago, the family members shouted at the embassy: “Malaysia, return our loved ones!”

One of the protesters was given permission to approach the embassy to hand a letter addressed to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The plane’s disappearance has been the subject of conspiracy theories, but the relatives are still desperate for answers.

A final report in 2018 pointed to failings by air traffic control and found that the course of the plane was changed manually. – March 8, 2024
