Neighbours say they were unaware tragedy unfolded near their homes

KUALA LUMPUR – The community at the Sri Sabah flats in Cheras was left in shock upon learning about the death of a 12-year-old boy in their neighbourhood through social media.

During Scoop’s visit to the site yesterday, residents revealed their astonishment, saying that they only became aware of the incident through social media yesterday, despite the boy’s reported death on Thursday afternoon.

“We reside in the same block, but we were oblivious to the incident yesterday. The news reached us through a random TikTok clip. My friends also shared the information on WhatsApp to gather more details since we are neighbours, but we had no knowledge until we saw it on the TikTok video,” shared one resident with Scoop.

Two days ago, the boy tragically lost his life, reportedly falling from the 12th floor of a flat in Cheras in the afternoon.

Cheras district deputy police chief Ridzuan Khalid said the victim was found unconscious on the grass beneath the flat by members of the public at 1.52pm.

Ridzuan confirmed that the boy was later pronounced dead by a medical officer from Canselor Tuanku Muhriz Hospital, who arrived at the scene with the police team.

Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed her lack of awareness about the crime scene yesterday, as there were no sounds of ambulance or police sirens.

“I was at home all day (yesterday), but I heard nothing – no ambulance or police sounds. It seemed like a regular day here. It is shocking to learn about the news from social media when something tragic happened right in our neighbourhood,” said the 30-year-old resident from the 14th level of the block.

When inquiring with personnel from the block’s maintenance office, she discovered that even they were unaware of the incident, as the investigation concluded swiftly.

“I didn’t know much about the incident until I received the news through a forwarded WhatsApp message. The investigation was already over when we (my colleague and I) returned from our lunch break, but we heard that the boy was found dead on the spot yesterday,” she explained.

The location where the boy was discovered deceased was near the stairway at the right corner of the 56th block. – March 9, 2024
