Coldplay, Blackpink concerts contributed RM201 mil to Malaysian economy

RM2.4 million in revenue was collected from 23 sporting events at Bukit Jalil National Stadium

6:49 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Coldplay’s and Blackpink’s mega concerts at Bukit Jalil National Stadium contributed RM201 million to the country’s economy, said Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh (Segambut-PH).

“Organising concerts not only gives returns to the Malaysia Stadium Corporation but also other sectors, such as e-hailing, tourism, hospitality, transport and logistics, and small businesses.

“The government also benefited from tax collection – RM2.7 million from Blackpink’s concert and RM8 million from Coldplay’s gig,” she said in her winding-up speech in the Dewan Rakyat today.

She added that RM2.4 million in revenue was collected from 23 sporting events held at Bukit Jalil.

“That includes RM1.8 million in stadium rental, RM340,000 in rental of corporate suites, business activities RM146,000 and RM52,000 in parking collection.

“The revenue from non-sporting events totalled RM2.8 million from 10 organised last year.

“The revenue includes stadium rental at RM1.6 million, ticket commission RM686,000, rental of corporate suites at RM311,000, business activities at RM101,000 and parking collection at RM71,000.

“In total, the Stadium Corp has collected RM5.2 million in revenue through 33 events held at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium last year.”

K-Pop superstar girl group Blackpink rolled into town in March of last year for their Born Pink World Tour and played to a sold-out crowd of 50,000 at the national stadium.

In November, Coldplay rocked 81,000 concert-goers for their Music of the Spheres World Tour in the same stadium.

Meanwhile, Yeoh said reports on offers for Malaysia to host Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour were inaccurate.

“I want it to be on record as has been answered by Sportswork Group Sdn Bhd that the reports of the offer (of Swift performing in Malaysia) are simply not true.” – March 13, 2024
