Doctor at HRPB reports poison pen letter to police amid sex harassment claims

Male doctor alleges letter has tarnished his name

10:24 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Police have received a report from a male doctor working at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) regarding the spread of an anonymous letter on social media, which has tarnished his name.

In a statement, Ipoh district police chief Yahaya Hassan said that the 43-year-old man lodged the report yesterday.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that a circulated letter accused the male doctor and several other staff at the hospital of committing reprehensible acts, particularly targeting trainee doctors at the orthopaedic department,” he said.

Yahaya said that the case was investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, pertaining to the improper use of network facilities or services.

“Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to reach out to the investigation officer, ASP Fadli Ahmad, at 019-250-0019 to assist in the investigation.

“The public is also advised against making any statements based on rumours that could potentially harm an individual’s credibility,” he added.

Yesterday, Perak Health Department director Dr Feisul Idzwan Mustapha said the department has established an independent investigation committee in response to allegations of sexual harassment and threats involving HRPB staff.

Prior to the announcement, the letter had been making the rounds on social media about alleged frequent instances of sexual harassment by the doctor towards female trainee doctors, particularly within the orthopaedic department, accompanied by threats to prolong their training period.

It was also alleged that the doctor was involved in bribery concerning patients and was accused of theft for appropriating equipment for personal use outside the hospital. – March 17, 2024
