Jakim issues stern warning to KK Supermart over ‘Allah’-printed socks sale

Dept confirms meeting with store's group executive chairman to discuss preventive measures

PUTRAJAYA – The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) has issued a stern warning to the management of KK Supermart and Superstore Sdn Bhd regarding the sale of socks bearing the word ‘Allah’, urging them to ensure that issues related to religious sensitivity do not recur.

Its director-general, Datuk Hakimah Mohd Yusoff, said in a statement today that they had a meeting with KK Supermart and Superstore Sdn Bhd group executive chairman Datuk Seri K.K. Chai, yesterday.

Hakimah said the company provided clarification regarding the issue and steps to prevent such problems from recurring.

“KK Supermart and Superstore Sdn Bhd also agreed to review and update the company’s standard operating procedures,” she said.

She added that Jakim supports the action taken by the police in initiating an investigation into the recent issue of the sale of socks with the word “Allah” printed on them.

Hakimah said that Jakim views the issue seriously, as it not only involves religious sensitivity but also has the potential to undermine social harmony in the country.

“Jakim warns all entrepreneurs, manufacturers, suppliers, and importers to always be mindful and pay serious attention to sensitive issues involving religion and ethnicity to maintain the harmony and well-being of the people in the country.

“At the same time, all parties are advised not to raise old issues related to the 3Rs (religion, race and royalty) and leave this matter to the authorities,” she said. – March 19, 2024
