MCMC collaborates with NGOs, police to combat online child sexual crimes

Multimedia commission and leading NGOs convene to discuss strategies to safeguard children from online predators

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is collaborating with several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to address online sexual exploitation of children.

MCMC and groups led by Yayasan Chow Kit (YCK) held a meeting chaired by commissioner Derek Fernandez at its headquarters in Cyberjaya yesterday.

Ten other NGOs also participated in the discussion on collaborative efforts between MCMC, the groups, and the police, MCMC said in a statement.

“The online issues include sexual grooming, sexual crimes, and sexual abuse of children in Malaysia,” the commission said.

“The discussion focused on case statistics and the collaborative approaches to be taken.”

Also participating from the Communications Ministry were its secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, while others from the MCMC were commissioner Datuk Wei Chuan Beng and chief corporate affairs officer Datuk Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin. 

Royal Malaysia Police child investigation unit head Hirdawati Isa, YCK founder Hartini Zainudin, and Childline Foundation CEO Datin P.H. Wong were also in attendance.

Other organisations that attended the meeting were ECPAT Malaysia, Malaysian Association of Social Workers, Unicef Malaysia, Protect and Save the Children, Monsters Among Us, Operation Underground Railroad, Global Shephers Bhd, Faculty of Psychology and Social Sciences University Cyberjaya, National Early Childhood Intervention Council, Make It Right Movement, and Johore Women’s League. – March 21, 2024
