Education minister says basics will be introduced at primary level under Technology and Digital subject while further exploration will continue at secondary schools

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian school students will dive into the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) knowledge as part of the revamped 2027 school curriculum, said Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek today. 

The ministry is steadfast in its mission to nurture a proficient workforce equipped with AI knowledge and skills, vital for Malaysia’s sustained competitiveness in the global digital economy, she said in a parliamentary written response to Pang Hok Liong (Labis-PH). 

Pang inquired about the ministry’s strategy to integrate AI-related subjects at the primary school level to cultivate skilled professionals. 

“The students will be introduced to the basics of AI at the primary school level in the new subject called Technology and Digital. 

“Further exploration and application of AI will continue at the secondary school level in subjects such as computer science, information and communication technology, and design and technology,” Fadhlina (Nibong Tebal-PH) said. 

Fadhlina added that digitally literate students will be able to apply knowledge and skills to solving problems and creating something new by using the concept of computational thinking.  

Among the digital knowledge and skills that will be implemented in this new curriculum are those related to AI, she said. 

Last December, the minister said the 2027 school curriculum, which was framed on a standard-based and competency-oriented curriculum, aims to produce knowledgeable and competent students with an optimal balance in providing quality education. 

“This integrated learning class uses a teaching and learning approach that combines content and skills from various disciplines. 

“Students will learn to apply knowledge, skills, and values in a holistic learning experience that is meaningful, relevant, and connected to the real world,” she said. – March 21, 2024
