Malaysia’s airport passenger charges among most affordable in Asean

KLIA, KLIA2's levy lower than Phnom Penh, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Yangon, as well as Chiang Mai, Phuket, Bangkok

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s upcoming revised passenger service charges (PSC) for local airports place the country in the lower half compared to neighbouring Asean nations, showcasing competitive pricing.

A survey by Scoop reveals that Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 2 (KLIA2), along with other local airports (excluding KLIA 1), rank third for their attractively low tariffs.

The Malaysian Aviation Commission recently announced that effective June 1, 2024, until December 31, 2026, international flights departing from KLIA1 will incur RM73 in PSC per flight, while KLIA2 and other international airports will levy RM50.

These revised rates aim to bolster the aviation sector’s recovery post-Covid-19 pandemic.

The only airports that have lower PSCs than KLIA 2 and other local airports are the Brunei Airport and Manila Airport, with tariffs recorded at RM43 and RM47, respectively.

Meanwhile, KLIA1’s RM73 PSC tariff is cheaper than numerous other international airports, including the revised PSC tariff in Singapore at RM164, effective April 1.

Other airports with higher PSC tariffs include those in Phnom Penh (RM142), Hanoi (RM128), Ho Chi Minh (RM104), Yangon (RM95), as well as Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Bangkok (RM92)

Transport Minister Anthony Loke supports these figures, highlighting Malaysia’s position as one of Southeast Asia’s most budget-friendly travel destinations.

All revenue generated from PSC will be allocated towards maintaining and upgrading infrastructure, as well as enhancing airport services and facilities.

Previously, PSC charges from all local airports were RM35 for Asean travel and RM73 for destinations beyond the region. – March 22, 2024
