Crippling KK Mart? Why then did K.K. Chai, manufacturer call to say sorry, asks preacher

Firdaus Wong responds to photo posted by lawyer Siti Kasim of him standing in front of supermarket called MyKampung Fresh Mart

8:00 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Independent preacher Firdaus Wong has denied claims of attempting to sabotage KK Mart just because he allegedly has a supermarket named MyKampung Fresh Mart.

“If I intended to sabotage KK Mart, why did founder Datuk Seri K.K. Chai and the manufacturer call me twice to apologise over the socks printed with the word ‘Allah’?

“MyKampung Fresh Mart that was opened in 2021 has been closed,” he told Scoop.

He was responding to a post by lawyer Siti Kasim on X that showed him standing in front of a supermarket.

Firdaus said the photograph shared online had nothing to do with the socks issue.

He added that he was one of the first to uncover the sale of the socks and was also called as a witness to assist in the investigation.

“It means that if there is a prosecution later, I will be a witness for the public prosecutor and help the Malaysian authorities. Siti Kasim should thank me for carrying out my duty and responsibility as a Malaysian.”

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his deputy, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, called on all parties not to prolong divisive rhetoric over KK Mart and the offending socks.

After a photo of one pair with the word “Allah” went viral on social media, KK Supermart & Superstore Sdn Bhd founder Chai apologised following public outrage.

KK Mart’s local supplier, Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd, also apologised for an oversight in its quality control process, saying it had done its best to ensure that all 18,800 socks received from its vendor in China were cleared for sale here.

Police said their probe into the matter had been completed, and that they were recommending to the Attorney-General’s Chambers that both KK Mart and its supplier Xin Jian Chang be charged. – March 23, 2024
