Sabah govt wants detailed probe after student’s death in vocational college hostel

State administration takes serious view of last Friday’s incident in Lahad Datu

4:22 PM MYT

KOTA KINABALU – The Sabah government takes a serious view of the incident involving the death of a male student at the Lahad Datu Vocational College hostel last Friday.

The state government urged police and the Higher Education Ministry to conduct a detailed investigation into the case.

State Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Fairuz Renddan expressed the Sabah government was concerned about the incident as it involved violence among students and happened in a college hostel.

“Things like this could be prevented if students uphold discipline and have a strong sense of tolerance. Any disagreements among students residing in a hostel should be immediately reported to the hostel warden.

“This is important so that unwanted incidents like the one in Lahad Datu do not recur,” he said in a statement here today.

Meanwhile, Fairuz said both school managements and the Sabah Education Department should pay attention to bullying and physical abuse cases that had been reported in secondary schools in the state.

“The schools and the State Education Department must take disciplinary action against students found guilty and not compromise with misbehaviour, particularly in cases of bullying and violence involving school students,” he added.

Last Friday, a 17-year-old student was found dead with signs of bruises and injuries on several parts of his body at a vocational college hostel at 6.50am. – March 24, 2024
