Ramadan resilience inspires violinist to embrace Islam onstage

Amrizal Firdaus sheds tears of gratitude as he recites shahada, marking a profound moment in his spiritual journey

SANDAKAN – The remarkable resilience displayed by Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan catalysed a life-changing decision by 29-year-old violinist Amrizal Firdaus.  

In a joyous ceremony witnessed by hundreds, he embraced Islam during the Ramadan Jazz Elopura event at Harbour Mall Piazza. 

Formerly known as Harold Anton, Amrizal shared that his interest in Islam began a year ago when he became fascinated by the practice of fasting during Ramadan. 

“I was interested in the culture of the religion. I was curious as to how they train themselves to be resilient during Ramadan, because I felt like it was impossible to not eat and drink for a whole day. 

“How did they do it and where did the strength come from? So I started learning about the religion from then on and I grew to love Islam.”

Amrizal said he had informed his family of his decision, and they supported him wholeheartedly. 

“They respected my choice, emphasising the importance of being a good person regardless of religion,” he added. 

A talented violinist, Amrizal was invited from Kota Kinabalu to perform at the Ramadan Jazz Elopura event, organised by several Islamic bodies. 

Upon learning of Amrizal’s intention to embrace Islam, the organising chairman, Datuk Mohd Afendi Hamdan, suggested that he recite the shahada (Islamic profession of faith) onstage during the programme. 

Overwhelmed by the opportunity, Amrizal tearfully recited the shahada in front of hundreds of spectators. 

“I could not believe it. I have decided to embrace Islam a long time ago but I cannot believe that the time has come. 

“This may be a small matter to other people but this is a huge event for me. It took a lot of courage to do this…big steps,” he said. 

Amrizal was guided by a representative from the Pertubuhan Islam Seluruh Sabah Sandakan youth chief, Mohamad Sufan Bahrin. 

The event was witnessed by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Zulkifli Hasan, who was present to launch the programme. – March 24, 2024
