Constitutional amendments on citizenship set for first reading in Dewan Rakyat today

Bill relates to conferring citizenship to babies born abroad to Malaysian mothers

9:11 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The bill to amend constitutional provisions on citizenship is among four bills set for their first reading in the Dewan Rakyat today.

The Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2024 relates to the conferring of citizenship to babies born abroad to Malaysian mothers. It will be tabled today along with the Cybersecurity Bill 2024, the Income Tax (Amendment) Bill 2024 and the Labuan Business Activity Tax (Amendment) Bill 2024.

Today’s sitting will also continue with the debate on the Environmental Quality (Amendment) Bill 2023, in addition to the Licensed Land Surveyors (Amendment) Bill 2024 and the Supply (Reallocation of Appropriated Expenditure) Bill 2024, which are also listed for their second reading.

Meanwhile, according to the Order Paper on the official Parliament website, the issue of broadband access will be raised by Edwin Banta (Selangau-GPS) to the communications minister during the question-and-answer session.

At the same session, Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (Masjid Tanah-PN) will ask the domestic trade and cost of living minister to state the government’s guarantee to ensure subsidised essential goods such as sugar, packet oil and local rice recover as before the general election in 2022.

Oscar Ling (Sibu-PH) on the other hand wants the defence minister to state a detailed list of measures that have been implemented as outlined under the Defence White Paper from 2019 to 2023.

The first meeting of the third term of the 15th Parliament will last for 19 days until March 27. – March 25, 2024
