Police confirm 68-year-old suspect admitted expressing discontent with Umno Youth chief’s stance on KK Mart issue

KUALA LUMPUR – Police have arrested an elderly man who allegedly made a death threat against Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh over the latter’s stance on the controversy involving the KK Mart convenience store.

Melaka Tengah district police chief Christopher Patit said the 68-year-old suspect was apprehended around 4pm in the vicinity of the Kandang area yesterday following a report from a complainant who overheard the threatening remarks.

He said that the complainant, a 62-year-old retired government officer, heard the suspect uttering threats while at the suspect’s car workshop.

“On March 20, when the complainant was at the car workshop, the suspect mentioned that ‘the Umno Youth chief of Malaysia (Akmal Saleh), especially regarding the KK Mart issue, will one day be shot dead’,” he said.

“The complainant remained silent and did not engage with the man, and this morning, the complainant came forward to lodge a police report for further investigation before the suspect was subsequently detained,” he said, as quoted by Astro Awani.

Patit said the initial investigation revealed that the scene was at a car repair workshop, and the suspect admitted to expressing his dissatisfaction with the complainant regarding Akmal’s statement.

“Based on initial inquiries, the suspect admitted to expressing his dissatisfaction to the complainant regarding Akmal’s statement about the KK Mart issue.

“There is no closed-circuit television system or security surveillance service in the area,” he added.

Patit said that the suspect was released on police bail due to illness, and the case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code.

Akmal took to social media to reveal that he was a victim of a death threat after being contacted by an unidentified individual while en route to an official event yesterday.

He later proceeded to make a police report at the Jasin district police headquarters yesterday evening. – March 27, 2024
