RoS approves Bersatu’s changes to party constitution aimed at sacking turncoats

Social media users point out six MPs who defected did so before amendments in effect

5:29 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has approved Bersatu’s amendments to its party constitution, which is aimed at sacking defectors after a handful of them declared their support for the prime minister.

According to the letter shared by Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, the amendments are effective April 1 this year.

He also posted on X that this would allow Bersatu to vacate six parliamentary seats held by its MPs who had pledged support for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, paving the way for by-elections.

However, netizens slammed Wan Fayhsal over his assertions, pointing out that the amendments were only effective April 1, and the six MPs had declared support for Anwar prior to this.

Later, he told Scoop to “wait for our sec-gen”, referring to Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.

In March, Bersatu sought to amend article 10 of its constitution to automatically terminate the membership of elected representatives if they support any other party or policy not aligned with Bersatu’s position.

Party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had said once the amendment was approved by the RoS, Bersatu would seek to vacate the six parliamentary seats currently held by MPs who remained in the party but had publicly supported Anwar and the unity government.

The MPs involved were Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar) and Datuk Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tg Karang).

The party’s Selat Klang assemblyman, Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari, also announced his backing for Anwar’s government, claiming that his move was a result of Perikatan Nasional’s silence amid accusations thrown at the Malay rulers. – April 2, 2024
