No need for Akmal to show up at Dang Wangi tomorrow, says district top cop

This after Umno Youth chief’s claim he will be hauled up to police station in KL

KUALA LUMPUR – Police will not be recording Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh’s statement at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters tomorrow.

Dang Wangi police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya confirmed the matter when contacted by Scoop today.

“The investigation (into Akmal) is being handled by Bukit Aman’s classified crime investigation unit. For now, (Akmal’s statement) will not be recorded at Dang Wangi tomorrow.”

Earlier today, Akmal claimed in a Facebook post that he was scheduled to have his statement recorded at Dang Wangi tomorrow.

In the same post, the Merlimau assemblyman revealed that he had been detained by Sabah police at Kota Kinabalu International Airport to assist in investigations into his comments and actions related to convenience chain store KK Mart’s sale of “Allah”-printed socks.

In a video recorded when he was being detained, Akmal was captured saying “no fear, no surrender” while smiling at the camera from inside a police vehicle.

After being detained for over two hours at the Kota Kinabalu police headquarters, Akmal was summoned by the authorities for a second round of questioning.

He also told reporters that he was confused by the investigation conducted by Sabah police, stating that he had not made any statements in the state about the “Allah”-printed socks issue.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has since told Scoop that police had detained Akmal in Kota Kinabalu because police had received reports against him yesterday.

Since police are looking to complete their sedition probe into Akmal within seven days, Razarudin said they had opted to detain him today.

He said this when asked about Akmal’s assertions that he had been detained in Sabah today despite being summoned for questioning at Bukit Aman tomorrow.

Razarudin had earlier confirmed that the authorities were investigating Akmal under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, over his actions and speeches amid the KK Mart fiasco.

Previously, Akmal had vocally criticised the sale of the “Allah”-printed socks and condemned KK Mart for the incident – despite company founder Datuk Seri Chai Kee Kan having publicly apologised for the offensive item.

The controversy has since led to several KK Mart outlets being attacked, with three stores each in Pahang, Perak and Sarawak being hit with molotov cocktails in over a week. – April 5, 2024
