KUALA LUMPUR – Social media platform providers Meta and TikTok have pledged their commitment to ensure online safety measures for children below the age of 13.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the agreement reached during a discussion today also touched on the monitoring of content related to crime, such as online gambling, scams, fake news and the 3Rs (race, religion, and royalty).
“The two social media platform providers were also notified of the government’s plans for a better framework for laws involving online safety, policies, and guidelines for social media platform operations in Malaysia.
“This is in line with the Madani government’s commitment to ensuring the rights of Malaysians to voice their concerns and ensure a productive, harmonious and safe use of the internet for all,” said Fahmi in a Facebook post.
Fahmi had previously said that the Communications Ministry, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, and several agencies would meet with social media platform provider Meta today to discuss aspects of online safety. – April 8, 2024
