Foreign Ministry says one student still receiving follow-up treatment at Christchurch Hospital, two others discharged

5:45 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The welfare arrangements for all five Malaysian students involved in a road accident at Lake Tekapo in New Zealand last month have concluded, said Wisma Putra.

In a statement today, the Foreign Ministry said only one student involved in the multi-vehicle crash is still receiving follow-up treatment at the Christchurch Hospital, while two other injured students have been discharged.

“Of the two deceased, one was safely buried in Christchurch, while the remains of another student have been safely repatriated and buried in Malaysia.”

It also expressed its appreciation to the New Zealand government, hospital and university representatives, as well as the Malaysian community in Christchurch for their help in ensuring the welfare of the students.

On April 2, it was reported that one of the deceased, University of Canterbury student Megat Ashman Aqif Megat Irman Jefni, would be buried at the Muslim cemetery in Christchurch’s Bromley.

Megat, along with universitymate Wan Nur Adlina, were killed in a road accident on March 30, while fellow students Nur Firas Wafiyyah and Lya Issable Walton, along with Muhamad Faris Mohd Fairusham, a Victoria University of Wellington student, were injured.

The accident involved two vehicles as well as a motorcycle. – April 10, 2024
