Govt to prioritise enhancements to HKL’s third class ward facilities: Anwar

PM pledges swift action to expedite necessary upgrades in response to concerns about overcrowding, discomfort

2:29 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The government will look into expediting the necessary facilities in Kuala Lumpur Hospital’s (HKL) third-class ward, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad would look into the matter and bring it to the attention of the cabinet.

“We have seen firsthand how hot and crowded the third class ward is, and the minister (Dzulkefly) will bring it to the attention of the cabinet of ministers so that we can expedite the necessary steps.

“Of course, the minister (Dzulkefly) and the director (HKL) listen to the other urgent problems that the ministry and the government focus on to ensure that the infrastructure facilities are good,” he told reporters after visiting patients receiving treatment in HKL’s third class medical ward here today.

Also present were his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Dzulkefly and HKL director Datin Paduka Dr Rohana Johan.

Anwar said that he has been calling for a comprehensive study to be conducted, including the method of procurement of medicines to ensure cost-effectiveness.

“Whether the medicines are fully used, there should be no waste, and the priority is to focus on HKL due to the volume involved.

“…but we also have to focus on the clinic in Kapit, the clinic in Manek Urai, for example, so this is seen as a whole by the ministry, and when we make a decision, we know the Education Ministry and the Health Ministry receive the most funding in our country,” he said.

Meanwhile, the prime minister congratulated HKL on the hospital’s performance, which has received world-class recognition, and hopes that it will inspire all parties to enhance their efforts, charity and service. – April 11, 2024
