Police on the hunt for more suspects to ascertain motive in Shalom Avitan’s case

Seven out of 13 suspects are still remanded for further investigation, while six others are out on bail

KUALA LUMPUR – The hunt continues for more suspects linked to Israeli national Shalom Avitan, who was charged today with the possession and trafficking of 158 bullets and six guns.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain told Scoop that even though the main suspect has been charged, the investigation continues as authorities have yet to determine Avitan’s true motive.

“This is because there are still suspects who have yet to be detained who can assist in identifying the true motive of the case.”

He said seven out of 13 suspects who were detained before this are still being remanded for further investigation, while the other six suspects are out on bail.

On Avitan’s detention, Razarudin said the accused will be held in prison until the trial is over as his offence is non-bailable.

This morning, Avitan was charged at the sessions court here with possession and trafficking of firearms.

Avitan, who has a France passport, was arrested at a hotel in Jalan Ampang on March 27, after he was found to possess six guns and 158 bullets in his bag.

Investigations by the Criminal Investigation Department and Special Branch found that the man entered the country on March 12 with a France passport via a flight from the United Arab Emirates.

Last April 8, housewife Sharifah Faraha Syed Husin and her husband Abdul Azim Mohd Yasin were charged at the Klang sessions court for possessing a CZ75 P-01 CAL.9 Luger gun.

The couple was detained at the Kuala Selangor Ramadan bazaar on March 29 on suspicions of selling firearms to Avitan. – April 12, 2024
