MRT Taman Mutiara station temporarily closed after fire breaks out

Fire and Rescue Department completely extinguished the flames at 7.04pm

8:08 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station at Taman Mutiara, Cheras, has been temporarily shut down for safety reasons, following a fire that broke out in one of its utility rooms this evening.

Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd announced on its social media pages today that the station was closed after the 4:43pm incident, which affected its telecommunications equipment room.

“Rapid Rail has confirmed that the Taman Mutiara MRT Station has been temporarily closed for safety reasons due to thick smoke believed to be emanating from the station’s telecommunication equipment room.”

Rapid Rail said the operation control centre decided to close the station after receiving instructions from the Fire and Rescue Department. It said that all trains will bypass the station.

To ensure the continuity of the affected passengers’ journey, Rapid Rail has arranged for a temporary bus service, it said.

However, train services for other stations are not affected and are operating as usual, said Rapid Rail.

Meanwhile, the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department said that it received an emergency call regarding the incident at 4.52pm.

The department’s operations senior commander, Imam Bukhari Susami, said a team consisting of 23 officers from the Cheras and Jalan Hang Tuah fire stations arrived at the spot with fire rescue machinery, water tankers, and rapid intervention motorcycles.

“A 4×8-square-foot surface involving the entire battery supply area caught fire.

“The fire was brought under control at 6.26pm and completely extinguished at 7.04pm,” he said.

He added that there were no victims affected, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. – April 14, 2024
