KLIA shooting: 11 witness statements taken, bodyguard in stable condition

Selangor police chief says more witnesses, including suspect's relatives, will be summoned to assist with investigation

2:00 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Police have taken 11 statements from witnesses to the shooting at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1, including victims injured by gunfire and firecrackers, security guards, and doctors, to assist in the investigation of the incident, which occurred early yesterday morning.

Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said that several additional witnesses, including members of the suspect’s family and others, will be called in the near future.

At a press conference earlier, he confirmed that the bodyguard, Mohd Nur Hadith Zaini, better known as Along, who was struck by the gunshot, is in stable condition and is still receiving treatment at Cyberjaya Hospital.

Hussein also insisted that the suspect, Hafizul Harawi, acted alone and was not involved with other parties.

“We believe he is still in the country and in possession of the firearm. I urge him to come forward and surrender peacefully.

“The involvement of other people has been ruled out. Witness statements and closed-circuit television footage have confirmed the identity of the suspect.

“The individual who opened fire was Hafizul, acting alone. Currently, he is being investigated as the sole perpetrator,” he said.

On why police did not act against the suspect during the incident, Hussein said that public safety was the primary concern at the time.

“It was a public area, so evacuating the civilians first before engaging the armed suspect was the safest option compared to confronting an armed individual immediately.

“If we had engaged him, the situation could have been worse. If he had opened fire in a public area, more people, including children, would also be at risk,” he said.

It was reported by Scoop that a bodyguard was seriously injured after being shot by the suspect.

Investigations reveal that the suspect planned to shoot his wife, Farah Md Isa, also known as Farah Cie.

However, the bullet missed her while she was waiting for umrah pilgrims at KLIA, instead striking the bodyguard. – April 15,2024
