KLIA shooting: suspect’s brother wants end to ‘false’ accusations against parents

Family also in shock over Hafizul Hawari’s ‘terrible’ actions, says sibling Hanafi

KUALA LUMPUR – The brother of the suspect who opened fire at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 early last Sunday morning expressed disappointment over accusations made against their parents by netizens after the incident went viral on social media.

Hanafi Hawari, the younger brother of 38-year-old Hafizul, has urged the public to stop wrongfully accusing their parents.

“For as long as we have been a family, what happened is not the same as what is being said on social media.

“I’m disappointed when I read the WhatsApp messages, the threats and the accusations directed at my family. We would have never thought that Hafizul would choose to take matters into his own hands.

“Stop talking about things you don’t understand, and stop falsely accusing my parents and implying as if they would condone such actions. What kind of parents would want to see their child suffer through any of this?” he wrote on Facebook.

Hanafi also expressed his family’s shock over his brother’s actions, which they considered completely unnecessary.

“Yes, the shooter at KLIA is indeed my brother, my flesh and blood. We, as a family, didn’t believe he was capable of doing such a terrible thing.

“We do not understand what was going through his mind to willingly resort to such actions.

“For me, the shooting was completely unnecessary and not worth going through,” he said.

He further revealed that they had advised his brother to move on from what he was experiencing and to focus on raising his children.

“He had ignored our advice to ‘move on’ and focus on raising his six children, who are soon growing into adults and will need guidance from their parents.

“It seemed we were talking to someone who was no longer himself. We offered all kinds of encouragement and suggested various ‘exit plans’ as we tried to help him think clearly,” he said.

Scoop previously reported that early last Sunday morning, a shot fired by Hafizul struck the bodyguard of his estranged wife, Farah Md Isa, also known as Farah Cie.

The bodyguard is now reported to be in stable condition.

Based on the investigation, the suspect intended to shoot his wife, who was waiting for umrah pilgrims to return to KLIA, but the bullet went astray and hit the bodyguard instead.

Commenting further, Hanafi and his family members expressed their apologies to his sister-in-law’s bodyguard, who was injured in the incident at KLIA.

“On behalf of the Hafizul family, we sincerely apologise to the victims of the incident at KLIA.

“We hope he recovers as soon as possible. We are truly sorry,” he said.

Hafizul is remanded for seven days until next Monday to assist in the investigation carried out under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971. – April 16, 2024
