KUALA LUMPUR – Koperasi Melayu Petaling Bhd (Kopeta) has expressed confidence in the potential of the PJD Link highway project to generate job opportunities and support Bumiputera businesses in the Petaling district.

In a statement, Kopeta said that its over-2,000 members were voicing their full support for the development.

“We have been involved in the construction industry since 2014, and we believe that the PJD Link highway project holds significant potential to create job opportunities and support Bumiputera businesses, particularly in the Petaling district,” Kopeta said.

“We have identified sectors that will benefit from the PJD Link highway project.”

It said these included retail and food supply, especially to enhance the income of the B40 group, as well as young Bumiputera contractors encompassing various professionals such as engineers, quantity surveyors, contract managers, architects, quality control workers and site safety personnel.

Kopeta also highlighted the importance of supporting small Bumiputera contractors experienced in support works for construction, such as traffic management, land surveying and safety.

It said that graduates with qualifications in highway construction-related fields like civil, structural and electrical engineering would also benefit, as well as Bumiputera contractors with expertise in highway construction works.

“Overall, we firmly believe that the PJD Link highway project stands as the sole megaproject in the Petaling district currently, providing opportunities for Bumiputera contractors to engage,” the statement said.

“Constraints in contract opportunities have posed challenges to many Bumiputera contractors grappling with economic downturns.”

Furthermore, Kopeta underscored its commitment to assisting Bumiputera contractors in the Petaling district financially and technically to ensure the success of the PJD Link project.

“We urge the Selangor state government to promptly approve the PJD Link highway project to expedite the economic benefits or spillovers to Bumiputera, especially in the Petaling district.” – April 16, 2024
