MAS reinstates some flights as Mt Ruang ash cloud begins clearing from Borneo skies 

Routes include those between peninsula, Sarawak, Sabah, Labuan

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia Airlines has reinstated certain flights tonight after earlier cancellations following a volcanic eruption at Mount Ruang, Indonesia.

In a statement released at 9.30pm, it said weather conditions were improving, and issued a list of flights that would be reinstated.

The flights involve routes between the peninsula and Sarawak, Sabah and Labuan.

The reinstated flights to and from Sarawak tonight are as follows:

Earlier this evening, AirAsia announced it was reinstating certain flights tonight, involving the Bintulu, Kuching, Sibu, Johor Bahru and Kota Bharu routes, as well as between Kota Kinabalu and Miri, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Tawau, Hong Kong, Taipei and Shenzhen.

Meanwhile, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) has reportedly said that the weather forecast for Borneo shows the ash cloud from Mount Ruang’s eruption to be clearing from Sarawak skies.

CAAM chief executive Datuk Norazman Mahmud said certain flights had resumed from about 7pm, and air traffic controllers had been ordered to extend operating hours to handle reinstated flights, according to Free Malaysia Today.

Volcanic ash clouds were expected to clear from Borneo airspace starting 10pm tonight, he added. – April 18, 2024
