KUALA LUMPUR – A number of flights to Kota Kinabalu via major carriers Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia today are still cancelled following the eruption of Mount Ruang in Indonesia.

According to flight status checks on the Malaysia Airlines website, the flight to Kota Kinabalu at 8.05am this morning, MH2612, was cancelled.

So far, also cancelled for the same destination are flights MH2610 and MH2646 which were scheduled to depart at 9.15am and 11.35am respectively this morning.

For other flights, namely MH2614, MH2616, MH2640, MH2638, MH2606, MH2628, and MH2626, they are still scheduled as usual.

AirAsia had also called off at least three flights including flight AK5108 scheduled for 6.05am, AK5134 (7.15am) and AK5136 (9.15am) today.

However, other flights such as AK9112 (10am), AK5104 (1.35pm), and AK9110 (2.05pm) to Kota Kinabalu remain on schedule at press time.

Meanwhile, several netizens have expressed anger over the flight cancellations and an apparent lack of information regarding the rescheduled departure times.

On social media platform X, user @Rashidaaah said she “received no helpful responses” on her cancelled flight

“I was informed about the cancellation via email and text three hours before my flight. But with no info on the reasons and what I should do – it was vague. So I had to go to the airport to find out more and only then MAS office mentioned the eruption.”

“Only later I found out that other airlines already told their customers about the eruption in the first communication. That is basic info that could’ve helped us understand the situation, but @MAS missed out on that.”

Last night, Malaysia Airlines reinstated certain flights after earlier cancellations following the volcanic eruption.

In a statement released at 9.30pm, it said weather conditions were improving, and issued a list of reinstated flights. The flights involve routes between the peninsula and Sarawak, Sabah as well as Labuan. – April 19, 2024
