Cops tracing two suspects over ‘free Palestine’ graffiti at Tawau Starbucks

Assemblyman urges authorities to apprehend perpetrators for disrupting Sabah’s harmony and unity

6:08 PM MYT

SANDAKAN – A Starbucks outlet in Tawau fell victim to vandalism yesterday when its exterior wall was spray-painted with the phrases “free Palestine” and “boikot” (boycott).

Images of the defaced outlet quickly spread on social media, drawing attention to the incident.

Tawau deputy police chief Champin Piuh, when contacted, confirmed receiving a report about the act of vandalism, saying authorities are currently identifying two suspects using CCTV footage from the premises.

The Starbucks staff promptly removed the graffiti upon its discovery.

Expressing dismay over the incident, Warisan’s Sri Tanjong assemblyman, Justin Wong, condemned the actions of the perpetrators, saying that such behaviour is unacceptable in Sabah.

Wong highlighted Sabah’s tradition of harmony and unity among people of diverse backgrounds and urged against actions that could jeopardise this peace.

“I think that boycotting certain international brands is a personal choice and there is nothing wrong with it, but people should not resort to breaking the law.

“We must stop this kind of behaviour immediately. The culprits should face heavy punishments. Please, be rational so that we can maintain our stability and harmony.

“Sabahans have been known to be tolerant and understanding when it comes to matters relating to different races and religions. We are proud of this. Let’s not destroy the peace and harmony that we have been enjoying for decades,” he told Scoop today.

Wong called for swift action from Tawau police to apprehend the culprits, underscoring the importance of maintaining stability and harmony in the region. – April 19, 2024
