KUALA LUMPUR – Three witnesses who should be giving their statements to the police on the suitcase containing RM500,000 cash have yet to show up.

Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the trio are associates of a man, a director of a timber company, who is claiming the suitcase was taken from his friend’s apartment unit above the shopping centre, but was not put into his vehicle.

“The police are still waiting for them to give their statements as they gave the excuse of being overseas.

“Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the source of the money that he claimed was for his business,” he told reporters at the national mosque here after paying respects to former inspector-general of police Tun Haniff Omar, who died early this morning.

On March 20, security guards at a shopping centre in Damansara were surprised to find luggage containing cash exceeding RM500,000 in the parking lot of the premises.

Several hours after the press conference regarding the discovery of the money, on the following day, police confirmed receiving a report from a company claiming ownership of the luggage containing the cash.

However, on March 30, the company director did not bring any evidence proving that the money belonged to his company when he arrived at the police station.

The suitcase, the man said, was taken from his friend’s house, who wanted to return the money after borrowing it last year for investment purposes.

So far, only one individual has come forward claiming ownership of the suitcase containing the money. – April 20, 2024
