KUALA LUMPUR – Aviation security (Avsec) member Corporal Mohammad Shafiq Safi’ai was awarded RM1,000 as a token of gratitude for his bravery during the recent shooting incident at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

“Very proud! Thank you, (Shafiq), for acting bravely and taking action in the recent shooting incident at KLIA,” Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd said in a Facebook post.

“Shafiq, an Avsec member, gave a stern warning by pointing his gun at the suspect, who fired two shots and fled the scene.

“(Shafiq) has performed his duties with full responsibility to ensure the safety of (KLIA) visitors.”

Speaking to Sinar Harian, Shafiq said the safety of people in the vicinity was his only thought when the incident ensued – prioritising them over his own well-being.

“After the first shot, I immediately moved towards the bang and saw a man wearing a striped shirt aiming his gun at the victim point-blank.

“Without a second thought, I loudly shouted ‘hoi’ twice to redirect (the suspect’s) attention, before he aimed his gun at me.

“I hid behind a pillar for protection and saw the suspect escaping to the car park building. If I were shot at that time, I would have accepted it.”

In the shooting at KLIA last Sunday, bodyguard Muhammad Nur Hadith Zaini, 38, was shot while on duty.

The shooting, allegedly by Hafizul Harawi, was aimed at his wife, Farah Md Isa.

Police believe that Hafizul had personal issues with Farah prior to the attack.

He is under remand until Monday and on the lookout for defence lawyers.

Meanwhile, Nur Hadith underwent surgery but remains in an induced coma in the intensive care unit at Cyberjaya Hospital. – April 20, 2024
