Years-old tiff behind hot water attack on disabled man, suspect police

Suspect, victim know each other as they live in same apartment building, says district top cop

GEORGE TOWN – Police investigations revealed that a misunderstanding was suspected to be the cause of the incident in which a man with Down’s syndrome was splashed with hot water while in the lift of an apartment in Jalan Rajawali, near here, last Friday.

Southwest district police chief Kamarul Rizal Jenal said, based on preliminary investigation, the 39-year-old woman’s actions were influenced by a previous disagreement between them.

He said the pair knew each other because they both resided in the same apartment building.

“Investigation into the incident revealed that the incident transpired from a misunderstanding between the suspect and the victim involving a sensitive matter, which happened approximately three or four years ago,” he told reporters today.

Kamarul Rizal added that their team was presently engaged in ongoing investigations, which involved finalising the case’s investigation papers before transferring them to the prosecution office for further proceedings.

He also said that the 39-year-old woman who was arrested last Friday, several hours after the hot water splashing incident, had no signs of mental health issues.

“However, we will send her for further observation,” he said.

She has been remanded until Wednesday for an investigation under Section 324 of the Penal Code.

Kamarul said police had recorded statements from at least three people to date.

It was previously reported that a man with Down’s syndrome was splashed with hot water by a woman inside the lift of an apartment in Bayan Lepas.

The incident caused the 33-year-old man to suffer burns on his body. He is now in stable condition.

The 20-second video capturing the incident in the elevator also went viral on social media, prompting criticism from netizens towards the woman’s actions.

The victim had complained to his sister that a woman had splashed hot water on him while they were inside the lift. She then filed a police report. – April 22, 2024
