KLIA shooting: suspect to face two new charges at Sepang court

Hafizul Harawi, previously charged with firearms possession, possession of bullets, using fake vehicle registration plate, maintains his not guilty plea

SEPANG – The suspected gunman in the April 14 shooting at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Hafizul Harawi, has arrived at the Sepang court to face further charges over the incident. 

Clad in lock-up attire, the 38-year-old arrived at 8.15am, heavily escorted by police.

He is expected to be charged with two additional counts today.

Yesterday, he was charged under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 for possessing a firearm, Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960 for possessing bullets, and Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 for possessing a package of firecrackers without a permit at the Kota Bharu sessions court. 

Additionally, he faces three charges under the National Registration Regulations 1990 for possessing three MyKads belonging to other individuals and one charge under Section 108(3)(f) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for using a fake vehicle registration number plate. 

However, he pleaded not guilty to all seven charges brought against him. 

The court also ordered that Hafizul be remanded in Sg Buloh Prison for the duration of the proceedings.

The appointment of a lawyer, case mention, and document submission have been scheduled for May 23.

It was previously reported that the suspect was arrested in front of a private hospital by the special criminal investigation department of the Kelantan criminal investigation department at about 3pm on April 15.

The man fired two shots during the incident two weeks ago, one of which struck his wife’s bodyguard. The victim is currently being treated in a hospital.

The suspect is believed to have bought the gun he used from a Thai national for RM5,000. – April 25, 2024
