Remand for Perlis MB’s son extended till tomorrow as graft probe continues

Four other suspects to also be detained till tomorrow in case involving false claims

12:33 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The remand order for the son of Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli has been extended until tomorrow to assist in investigations regarding a case of submitting false documents and claims involving RM600,000 over the past two years.

Four other suspects have also had their remand periods extended until tomorrow, while a civil servant in the State Secretary’s Office who was previously remanded has been released after investigations against him were completed.

Magistrate Ana Rozana Mohd Nor granted the remand extension following an application from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to conduct investigations under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009.

All the suspects, aged between 26 and 37, were detained by the MACC between 7am and 8am around the state on Tuesday.

The case is being investigated relating to document forgery and making false claims when the project in question was not carried out.

The project involved maintenance, repair, supply and service works, starting from 2022 until now, estimated to be worth RM600,000.

Yesterday, Shukri confirmed that he was aware of his son’s arrest by the MACC and said he would leave it to the authorities to conduct their investigation.

“I have been informed of the news by the MACC and leave it to the discretion of the MACC; that’s all for now,” he said briefly when met by reporters after the Perlis state assembly sitting in Kangar yesterday.

He was also reported as saying that he would “explain” the MACC’s detention of his son in today’s assembly sitting. – April 25, 2024
