KUALA LUMPUR – Former Penang deputy chief minister II P. Ramasamy’s political party Urimai has reiterated its call for voters not to vote for Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) candidate in the coming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

Urimai secretary M. Satees stressed the party was not urging a boycott of the by-election, but merely for voters not to cast their ballots for Pang Sock Tao, 31, who is from DAP.

“Urimai is not asking voters to boycott the election, but we’re basically asking voters, especially the Indians, to not vote for the PH/DAP candidate. They’re free to vote for other independent or opposition (candidates),” Satees said in a statement today. 

“Urimai is an independent political party that is not aligned with PH-BN (Barisan Nasional) or the Perikatan Nasional opposition coalition,” he added.

Satees also said that Urimai was opposed to PH as it had “betrayed the trust” of the Indian community, asserting that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had “insulted” the community on numerous occasions. 

“We urge the Indians in Kuala Kubu Baharu to come out in full force and teach PH/DAP a lesson in this by-election.” 

Yesterday, Pang’s candidacy was announced by DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke. 

Before serving as Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming’s press secretary, Pang had been special officer to then energy, science, technology, environment and climate change minister Yeo Bee Yin.

The Election Commission has fixed polling in Kuala Kubu Baharu for May 11, with April 27 as the candidate nomination day. 

The state seat was vacated following the death of DAP assemblywoman Lee Kee Hiong, who died of ovarian cancer last month. She had held the former MCA stronghold for PH since 2013. – April 25, 2024
