DAP’s Kuala Kubu Baharu hopeful dons multiracial attire in run-up to poll

Pang Sock Tao’s wardrobe includes baju kebaya, sari and party’s typical black-and-white get-up

KUALA LUMPUR – The unity government’s candidate for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election, Pang Sock Tao, has relied on a diverse array of traditional attire in her wardrobe as she strives to leave a visual impression on voters. 

Official images of 31-year-old Pang, who is also Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming’s press secretary, were shared in a Kuala Kubu Baharu DAP media group earlier today by a party representative. 

Among the outfits donned by Pang include a flowing bright red baju kurung featuring blue flower motifs, a pastel yellow kebaya with light purple and green prints as well as another dark blue kebaya with seemingly batik-inspired patterns. 

She is also pictured in a purple sari paired with a beige blouse, a Pakatan Harapan T-shirt styled with dark blue jeans as well as in a white shirt and black pants, which is commonly known as DAP’s get-up for party functions. 

Following the announcement of Pang’s candidacy by DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke yesterday, several of the images were used in posters on the Selangor state seat hopeful’s biodata and mission statement. 

The posters were published in Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin and Tamil. 

Before serving as Nga’s press secretary, Pang, whose beginnings in DAP in 2017 include a stint as a presenter for the party’s video channel, UbahTV, had been special officer to then energy, science, technology, environment and climate change minister Yeo Bee Yin.

The same year she joined the party, she also graduated with honours from Universiti Tenaga Nasional with a bachelor’s in electrical and electronic engineering. 

The Kuala Kubu Baharu seat, which had 49.3% Malay voters in the state polls last year, is now 50% Malay, while Chinese voters comprise around 20%, Indian voters 18% and Orang Asli the remainder.

Pang will be defending the seat for DAP for the fourth time, following its former late representative Lee Kee Hiong’s three consecutive wins in previous elections.

Kuala Kubu Baharu fell vacant with Lee’s death aged 58 on March 21 due to cancer.

The Election Commission has fixed this Saturday for nominations and May 11 for polling. – April 25, 2024
