DAP-MCA feud: old video of DAP’s by-election candidate criticising BN resurfaces

DAP national publicity secretary attacks rivals MCA for sharing the video on social media

3:01 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The DAP-MCA feud continues as the Kuala Kubu Baharu race heats up after DAP candidate Pang Sock Tao’s old speech slamming unity government partner Barisan Nasional (BN) made the rounds on social media today.

DAP national publicity secretary Teo Nie Ching pointed her finger at MCA, saying their politicians should be more mature.

“This is not a new video, and not Xiao Tao’s speech in Kuala Kubu Baharu. The clip was a speech made in Kulai, Johor, when Xiao Tao was campaigning for me in 2022,” she said in a Facebook post.

Xiao Tao is Pang’s nickname in DAP circles.

Among those who shared the old video was Ling Tian Soon, who is MCA’s Yong Peng assemblyman.

In the 1 minute 47 second video, in which Pang spoke in Mandarin, she criticised BN’s administration and said that Pakatan Harapan (PH) should be given the chance to run the country.

She also made comparisons between DAP’s Anthony Loke and MCA chief Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong, when they were transport ministers.

“BN has been in government for 60 years, resulting in Malaysians losing hope. It’s not the people’s fault but BN’s,” she said in her speech.

Pang, who was press secretary to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, has been announced as PH’s candidate for the by-election.

Opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional (PN) is fielding Hulu Selangor Bersatu acting chief Khairul Azhari Saut, 54.

While the May 11 by-election is expected to be a showdown mainly between PN and the unity government, one other candidate from the Muda-Parti Sosialis Malaysia electoral pact is expected to join the fray.

Kuala Kubu Baharu, a former MCA stronghold, has been a DAP seat for the last three elections since 2013, when DAP’s Lee Kee Hiong won it by beating her rival from the BN component party by more than 1,700 votes.

Lee defended the seat in the 2018 general election, again beating the closest contender MCA, by 7,134 votes.

In the state election in August last year, Lee beat the PN candidate from Gerakan by 4,119 votes to win the seat for a third time. Other contenders were a candidate from Muda and one from Parti Rakyat Malaysia.

The seat became vacant when Lee died on March 21. – April 26, 2024
