Perlis MB Shukri Ramli detained after MACC quizzing on son’s graft probe

PAS leader held at agency’s headquarters in Putrajaya this morning

1:05 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli has been detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) after having his statement recorded over the investigation into his son involving alleged false claims.

Speaking to Scoop, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the state PAS chief was held at the agency’s headquarters in Putrajaya at 10am today.

It was previously reported that the MACC had detained Shukri’s son to facilitate investigations in relation to document forgery and false claim submissions totalling RM600,000 over the past two years.

Recently, the MACC also announced it had begun probing into a senior leader in the northern region of the country for suspected involvement in appointing multiple companies with vested interests involving several supply projects, amounting to approximately RM300,000.

According to a source, the leader is suspected of appointing multiple companies for road repair and maintenance work, funded by allocations from the Menteri Besar’s Office amounting to approximately RM1 million, with these companies having connections to his son.

Additionally, it is alleged that the projects are being monopolised by the leader’s son through the utilisation of various licences held by companies under the leader’s authority.

“The wrongdoing is believed to have happened between January 2023 and March 2024. These companies are also suspected of submitting false claims for the work done and receiving a commission of approximately 5% of the project’s value.

“So far, 15 companies controlled by the leader’s son have been identified. Among the types of work carried out are the supply of mineral water, hampers and souvenirs,” said the source.

It was reported that Shukri’s son had been released from MACC custody after being detained for two days. – April 30, 2024
