Cops, AG to discuss further action against 10 allegedly linked to arrested Israeli

KL police chief says seven local suspects will be released May 14 while three foreigners end detention May 15

5:40 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Police will hold discussions with the attorney-general to determine further action against 10 individuals suspected of being linked with the Israeli man who was charged with possession of firearms.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa also said that the detention period for these individuals – including three foreigners – under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) will conclude in mid-May.

“Seven local individuals will end their detention under Sosma on May 14. For the three foreign individuals, their detention will end on May 15,” he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters’ Aidilfitri celebration here today.

Also present at the ceremony were Bandar Tun Razak MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain.

On April 11, an Israeli man who holds a French passport pleaded not guilty in the Kuala Lumpur sessions court to two charges of possessing six firearms and 158 rounds of ammunition at a hotel in the capital last month.

He pleaded not guilty to one charge under Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960 for possession of the ammunition and a second charge under Section 7(1) of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 for trafficking the firearms.

Sessions court judge Tasnim Abu Bakar did not grant bail, and set May 21 for the next case mention.

On April 8, a couple pleaded not guilty in the Klang sessions court to charges related to the possession of firearms.

Sharifah Faraha Syed Husin, 41, and her husband Abdul Azim Mohd Yasin, 43, were charged under the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 before judge Sharifah Hascindie Syed Omar.

Sharifah Faraha was accused of illegally possessing a CZ75 P-01 CAL.9 Luger gun. Meanwhile, Azim was accused of being with his wife, putting him in the circumstances of having knowledge of his wife’s illegal gun possession.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain also confirmed that eight more individuals, three of them non-citizens, have been arrested in connection with the Israeli man who bought weapons after arriving in Malaysia.

They were detained in Johor and Kuala Lumpur early this month.

None of the eight hold Israeli passports, and the three non-citizens include two Turkish nationals and one citizen of Georgia.

One of the Turkish nationals also holds a US and a Polish passport. – April 30, 2024
