Cops receive three reports on alleged Kuala Kubu Baharu election violations

Despite this, campaign period has been peaceful so far, say Hulu Selangor police

7:51 PM MYT

HULU SELANGOR – Police have received three reports on alleged election offences since the start of the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election campaign on April 27.

Hulu Selangor district police chief Ahmad Faizal Tahrim said one investigation paper was opened concerning a probe under Section 4A of the Election Offences Act 1954 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

He said that since the start of the by-election campaign period, the Hulu Selangor district police headquarters had approved 28 ceramah permits and 25 campaign permits.

“To ensure that every campaign or ceramah conducted complies with the stipulated laws, police are monitoring all the areas involved.

“So far, the campaigns conducted by contesting parties have been in a harmonious, orderly and controlled manner,” he said in a statement today.

Faizal stated that police had urged for a peaceful campaigning period.

“Police advise all candidates and supporter groups to abide by and respect the laws stipulated throughout this by-election.

“Avoid making any provocations and actions that may lead to unwanted incidents, thereby jeopardising public safety and peace,” he said.

He said that any party with any complaints had been asked to refer to police for further action based on existing laws.

The Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election is seeing a four-cornered fight between candidates from Pakatan Harapan (PH), Perikatan Nasional (PN), Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) and an independent candidate.

PH is fielding Pang Sock Tao, who is a former press secretary to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, while PN is represented by Bersatu’s Khairul Azhari Saut.

Meanwhile, PRM is represented by Hafizah Zainuddin and Nyau Ke Xin is contesting as an independent candidate. – May 2, 2024
