Perikatan’s Khairul vows to address drowning risks in Kuala Kubu Baharu

He underscores need to upgrade infrastructure, enhance safety measures, such as installing more warning notices

KUALA KUBU BAHARU – Safety measures and upgraded infrastructure should be prioritised to prevent drowning incidents in Kuala Kubu Baharu river areas, said Perikatan Nasional candidate Khairul Azhari Saut. 

Khairul said that authorities should intensify safety precautions first when asked about potential measures to address the frequent occurrence of drowning incidents in this area if he is elected.

“(The drownings) were avoidable incidents, but no one could challenge God’s provisions,” he said when met by Scoop in Batang Kali today. 

“It’s the rainy season now, so headwater phenomena can occur at any time. I will urge the responsible authorities to enhance security measures, such as installing more warning notices,” he added.

Khairul also underscored the importance of upgrading riverfront infrastructure to cater to visitors, particularly families. This includes providing adequate changing rooms, washrooms, and other essential facilities.

“(This is so that) visitors do not return to the river when searching for areas to clean themselves. This issue needs to be addressed inclusively to prevent its recurrence,” he added.

Yesterday, Arif Fadzil Abdul Saleh, as well as his daughter Damia, 9, and son Malik, 6, drowned while on a picnic by Sg Balak. 

Their bodies were taken back to their hometown in Kuala Lipis, Pahang, today for burial.

Sg Balak has been the scene of drownings in both 2021 and 2022. One notable incident involved a swimmer becoming ensnared in a swirling pool while battling against strong currents. – May 6, 2024
