‘I received threats telling me to withdraw’, says Kuala Kubu Baharu independent candidate

The candidate chose not to provide any further details, opted against filing a police report

5:33 PM MYT

KUALA KUBU BAHARU – The independent candidate for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election, Nyau Ke Xin, has claimed that she received threats urging her to withdraw from the race during her campaign.

The 27-year-old revealed that she had received an anonymous call, presumably from a rival party, pressuring her to abandon her candidacy.

“It was just a bit of a threat, but I do not know from whom. It was a call saying ‘You should just leave, withdraw, as we are a big party. Do not waste your time’. It was just like that,” she said when met by reporters here today.

Despite the incident, Nyau chose not to provide any further details and opted against filing a police report.

“(Such matters) did not occur often, it was only once. Once the poll concludes, no one will be disturbing me. So I will just let it be.”

In acknowledging the challenging nature of her candidacy against formidable opponents, Nyau, hailing from Sabak Bernam, expressed confidence in securing a respectable number of votes.

“I’m optimistic about reclaiming my deposit. However, winning poses uncertainty with two prominent candidates in the arena. Nevertheless, I must maintain confidence,” she asserted.

To reclaim her deposit, Nyau must secure at least one-eighth of the total votes in the constituency, which amounts to approximately 5,029 votes considering Kuala Kubu Baharu’s 40,226 registered voters.

Nyau is facing Pang Sock Tao (Pakatan Harapan), Khairul Azhari Saut (Perikatan Nasional), and Hafizah Zainudin (Parti Rakyat Malaysia) for the seat, after it was vacated following the death of assemblywoman Lee Kee Hiong in March.

Should she lose the seat, Nyau said she would still assist the locals here, and create a service centre to support those in need. – May 8, 2024
