Saifuddin to meet US Treasury official who made Hamas, Iran claims 

Home minister to explain Malaysia’s stance following Brian Nelson’s allegations

KUALA LUMPUR – Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed he would meet the US Treasury’s top sanctions official, Brian Nelson, tomorrow.

He said he would present Malaysia’s official stance on matters raised at the meeting.

“I will meet Brian Nelson tomorrow morning, firstly to hear whatever he has to say,” he said.

“At the end of listening to their presentation, I will give an official explanation on the matters raised.” 

Saifuddin said this when met by reporters at the Defence Services Asia Exhibition and National Security for Asia 2024 Exhibition here today, reported Bernama.

Yesterday, Reuters reported that Iran was reliant on service providers based in Malaysia to move its oil near Singapore and throughout the region.

Nelson, the Treasury’s under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, said the United States saw Iranian oil being transferred near Singapore and in the region.

He added that Washington was also trying to prevent Malaysia from being used by Hamas to fundraise and move money, reported Reuters.

Nelson is on a four-day visit to Singapore and Malaysia, as his department is scrutinising fundraising and illicit sales of Iranian oil routed through Southeast Asia to finance militant groups. – May 8, 2024
