MAS plane returns to Tokyo after engine troubles early this morning

None of the 200 passengers onboard the flight are believed to have suffered injuries

8:58 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – A home-bound Malaysia Airlines flight was forced to make a U-turn and land at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport after the plane had engine troubles while flying over the East China Sea in the wee hours of this morning.

According to a report by Japanese news agency Yomiuri, the Airbus A350-941 plane reported trouble with its left engine while flying over the East China Sea northwest of Japan’s Amami Islands at approximately midnight, earlier today.

The flight then executed an emergency landing at the airport about two hours later.

None of the 200 passengers onboard the flight are believed to have suffered injuries.

Japanese authorities are currently investigating the incident while the runway was temporarily closed to check on an oil spill.

In January, another Airbus plane, an A350-900, had collided with a DHC-8 aircraft belonging to the Japan coast guard after an air traffic controller allegedly gave permission to Japan Airlines to land on the Haneda Airport runway.

European planemaker Airbus had then dispatched a team of specialists to assist the French air safety authority and the Japan Transport Safety Board in their investigation into the incident, which resulted in the deaths of five coast guard members while its pilot suffered severe injuries. – May 11, 2024
